How Color Snuck Its Way into My Home (and My Mood)

It didn’t happen all at once.
There wasn’t a grand makeover or a dramatic reveal.
Just a quiet shift—like sunshine slowly pouring into a room that had long been dim.

It started with a chair.

Bright teal. On sale. Totally unplanned.

I was supposed to be looking for a neutral armchair. Something “sensible” to match my muted palette of beige, cream, and gray. But this chair? It was unapologetically bold. Almost obnoxiously cheerful.

I walked away from it twice. But the third time, I gave in.

That chair was the turning point.

Color became a little rebellion.

A mustard yellow lamp joined the living room, then a coral-toned wall print in the hallway. I picked up a deep green vase at a weekend market—no plan, no space in mind. I just liked it.

For someone who used to obsess over matching tones and keeping things minimal, this felt... freeing. Like letting my home breathe a little.

And in a way, I was breathing easier too.

People noticed.

Friends would walk in and say, “Something feels different in here. Happier?”
Yes. That’s exactly it.

The color wasn’t just on the walls or the shelves—it was in the energy of the space. In me. It lifted the mood in subtle but lasting ways.

Now, it’s not about rules. It’s about joy.

I still love my neutrals. But now they share the stage with bursts of color that make me feel something—joy, comfort, warmth.

I don’t overthink it anymore. If something makes me smile, it belongs in my home.

Let Color In

If your space feels a little too quiet, try inviting in a pop of joy. You don’t need to paint your walls neon—just start with one piece that makes your heart skip.

When you’re ready, The Colorful Plus collection at The Living Plus is full of feel-good finds that might just surprise you—like that teal chair did for me.
